Candle Festival

Esta es una festividad religiosa budista muy importante. Marca el inicio de un periodo y cada actividad realizada antes, durante y después tiene un profundo significado espiritual.
A su vez, es una buena oportunidad para el turismo de Ubon y varios otros lugares (Ubon es el lugar más atractivo donde el festival cobra una dimensión importante), y actividades propias de cualquier festividad: venta de comidas, concursos, promociones, exposiciones artísticas y en especial la exposición de la cultura Thai. El concurso más importante es el de la "Vela" mejor presentada, en este caso es una carroza con una escultura completamente hecha con cera que generalmente representa alguna historia de Buda o sus enseñanzas.
Queremos compartir con ustedes estas fotos de este hermoso evento en el que pudimos participar.

This is a very important buddhist religious festival. It´s the beginning of a special time and every activity before, during, and after it has a very deep spiritual meening. At the same time it´s a good opportunity for tourism in Ubon and some other places (Ubon is the most important place in which this festival is held). You can find all the typical activities of a festival: selling of food, contests, promotions, art, and an exposition of Thai culture. The most important contest is the best Candle, in this case it´s a decorated carriage con a sculpture make of wax that represents a part of Buddha´s history or teachings.
We want to share with you these pictures of a beautiful event that we could be part of.

Cada parte del carroza es cuidadosamente diseñada y ensamblada. Cuadraditos con un diseño especial hechos en cera amarilla pegados con calor en una estructura de cera roja.
Every part of the carriage is specially designed and presented. These are small squares con a special design made of wax "glued" on the red wax structure with heat.

Esta es la forma de preparar la cera para poder tallarla: al fuego para dejarla en condiciones.

This is how the wax is prepared to be cut: on the fire.

Una noche fuimos a ayudar a cortar algunos pocos de los diseños para las carrozas con un pequeño punzón afilado en coco. Nos enteramos después que esto es como una especie de rito (ayudar a cortar las pequeñas partes) que realizan los budistas en esta época del año.

One night we went to cut some design for one of the carriages. You do that with a small stick with a sharp end. We found out that this is a kind of ritual that buddhist people do at this time.

Algunos no sirven para estas cosas (por eso no hay fotos de Andrés haciéndolo)

... Y a otros no los podes parar... "Naty: Ya nos tenemos que ir? - Andy: Si, están cerrando -Naty: me puedo llevar algunos a casa para hacerlos? - Andy: NO, porque no vas a dormir -Naty: podemos venir mañana? -Andy: NO, MAÑANA YA ES EL FESTIVAL!!!!"

...And some others can´t stop... "Naty: Do we really have to go?" "Andy: Yes, they are closing". "Naty: Can I take some home to finish more?" "Andy: NO, because you will not sleep". "Naty: Can we come back tomorrow?". "Andy: NO, TOMORROW IS THE FESTIVAL!!!".

Es la vela principal ubicada en el parque de la ciudad. A los costados tiene las imágenes de los reyes porque este monumento los representa.

This is the main candle located at the city´s most important park. On the sides it has pictures of the king and queen because this monument represents them.

We understand that this is a special candle sent by the King himself for this event.

El desfile de las carrozas. Delante de cada carroza había una banda musical subida en una camioneta preparada para que toquen en vivo desde ahí.

The carriages exposition. In front of every carriage there was a musical band on a truck so they can play live. 

Detrás de la banda seguía un grupo de mujeres generalmente realizando las danzas típicas del lugar.

Behind the band there was a group of women (usually) dancing.

Estas son el tipo de "Vela" armadas en los templos que participan del concurso

This is one of the candles made at the temples for the contest.

Delante de cada carroza iban danzando o tocando instrumentos diferentes personas representando a ese templo. No importaba la edad, como en este caso podemos ver.

In front of every carriage there were people dancing or playing instruments. Those people repersented that temple. Age was not an issue.

Es un evento cultural, religioso y familiar, no importa la edad, color , estatura, etc. Todos consideran un honor participar.

It´s a cultural, religious, and familiar event. Age, color or height are not problems. Everyone considers participating an honor.

This carriage didn´t participate but is sooo beautiful

Están hechas de cera en su base y hojas de banana y flores recubriendo todo.

They are made of wax and banana leaves and flowers.

Esta mujer de más de 80 años de edad posiblemente, realizaba artesanías a la antigua manera en uno de los puestos (stands) del parque.

This woman is probably over 80 years old and was making pottery the old style in one of the stands at the park.

Hubo una exposición artística de escultura en cera. Tuvimos el placer de encontrar a un Argentino ahí. Fabian Rucco, un genio total, no solo por la obra que se mandó (fué la mejo en significado y elaboración para nosotros), sino también porque nos llevó cosas para nuestras familias en Argentina.

There was an art exposition of wax sculptures. We had the pleasure of finding an Argentinian there. Fabian Rucco is a genious, not only for the sculpture that he made (it was the one with better meaning and elaboration), but also because he took some things for our families back to Argentina.

Parece que otro de los concursos era "quien tiene más fotos con los FARANG (extranjeros)" ;) Esos días avanzábamos solo unos pasos y te paraba gente pidiéndote sacarse una foto con vos... interesante, te sentís una celebridad... jejeje

Looks like another of the contest was "who gets more pictures with FARANG (foreigners)". In those days we could walk only a few steps before someone stoped us to take a picture.. Very interesting, we felt like celebrities.... hahaha!
